Taishanese preserves Middle Chinese (MC) nasal initial ri (日, reconstructed to be [ɲ]). In Cantonese, this initial has been denasalized to be [j]. For example:
    如乳児爾二而耳饒染任然熱軟人忍日潤

About half of the MC velar nasal yi (疑 ŋ) consonants also became [j] in Cantonese. In Taishanese, essentially all of them retain the [ŋ] pronunciation:
    魚語愚虞娛遇宜儀義疑驗嚴業言研元原願月迎玉
